The economics of the green transition

Prescient helps companies and public institutions make decarbonisation and circular business models add up. We combine economic analysis with AI, data and technology, so decisions cut impact and hold up in the boardroom and in the budget.

What we do

Three areas of work, one discipline: economics

Most sustainability advice stops at the target. We start where the money is: cost, return, risk and timing.

01 · Climate economics

What does the transition cost, what does it return, and how fast must it go?

  • Greenhouse gas accounts, Scope 1–3, ready for audit and EU sustainability reporting (CSRD)
  • Science-based targets (SBTi) and CDP climate disclosure
  • Transition plans and abatement cost curves
  • Climate scenarios, carbon prices and climate risk

02 · Circular economy

Where is the value in keeping materials in use?

  • Product-as-a-service and sharing models
  • Repair, refurbishment, resale and take-back
  • Circular supply chains and material recovery
  • Business cases, material flows and producer responsibility
Circular economy →

03 · Data & AI

How can AI and data cut resource use, and pay for themselves?

  • Data audits that show where resources, waste and value sit
  • AI and automation in sourcing, production and delivery
  • Private AI platforms, purpose-built on your own data
  • Every use case backed by a business case

The next decoupling

Denmark has decoupled growth from carbon. Not yet from materials.

Since 2000 the Danish economy has grown 38%. CO₂ has fallen by almost half on Danish territory, and by more than a quarter when emissions in imported goods are counted. Material use is 5% higher than in 2000. Circular business models are how that changes.

Denmark, index 2000 = 100. GDP in constant 2021 international dollars. CO₂ from fossil fuels and industry; “incl. imports” is consumption-based, adjusted for trade. Material use is domestic material consumption (DMC): materials extracted in Denmark plus imports, minus exports.
Sources: Eurostat, OECD, IMF and World Bank (2026) and Global Carbon Budget (2025), via Our World in Data; Eurostat material flow accounts (env_ac_mfa, 2026).

−27%CO₂ incl. emissions in imports, 2000–2023
−48%CO₂ emitted on Danish territory, 2000–2024

Denmark is not alone. The IPCC finds at least 18 countries that have cut emissions for more than ten years in a row. Materials are a different story: global material use has more than tripled since 1970, and extracting and processing resources causes more than half of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions (UNEP International Resource Panel, 2024).

Start with your question

What is on your mind?

Most engagements start with one of these questions. Each points to the first, fixed-scope step that answers it.

Growth

Targets and governance

How we start

No business case, no build. No baseline, no pilot. No measured result, no scale.

Every engagement moves in small steps. Each ends with a gate, and nothing moves on without a strong business case and a way to measure the outcome. You can stop after any step and keep what you have paid for.

  1. 00

    First conversation

    Free · 60 minutes

We agree the business question, what data exists and whether we are the right fit. You get a one-page note.

GateA clear question with an owner on your side.

  2. 01

    Scan

Fixed scope and price · 2–4 weeks

A fact base, the value at stake and three options, with the baseline and data gaps stated.

GateThe value at stake is quantified against a stated baseline.

  3. 02

    Decision workshop

1 day · optional board briefing

Management chooses one to three priorities, each with an owner, KPIs for money and impact, and stop criteria.

GateA named sponsor, agreed KPIs and stop criteria for every priority.

  4. 03

    Business case

    4–6 weeks

A business case in your board’s format: investment, payback, risks, funding, partners and regulatory fit, plus the measurement plan.

GateThe business case is approved, and the baseline and measurement plan are in place.

  5. 04

    Pilot

    8–12 weeks

One priority built and tested against success criteria fixed before it starts. We bring in specialist partners where they add value.

GateMeasured results meet the success criteria agreed up front.

  6. 05

    Scale and measure

    Quarterly

Roll-out with results tracked against the business case: DKK saved and earned, tonnes of CO₂e and materials.

GateEach quarter: scale, adjust or stop, based on the numbers.
